You live alone or you have a family and you are thinking “Wouldn’t it be nice to have a dog? (or a cat, or a ferret, etc) . That “free pet” on Facebook marketplace or Craigslist is far from free.
While we encourage pet adoption, we encourage Responsible pet adoption. We often receive requests here at Rex Inc. from people who just adopted a cute little puppy from a neighbor or an online “free pet” page and they need everything. That frosts my paws. Sure, that adorable, fuzzy little puppy melted his way into your heart. But did you give one moment of thought to how you are going to feed him? Buy all the things he needs, like collars, leashes, bedding, treats, toys, vaccinations, vet visits, spay or neuter? Well, you must.
According to Rover.com, initial costs of adopting a dog range from $1,050 to $4,8480. That includes vet care ( vaccination, spay/neuter, well care) , necessities and things such as flea, tick and heartworm prevention. Tack on things like pet insurance, grooming, boarding, dog walking and that number can add an additonal $1,210-$4,040. Recurring expenses can be anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand a year, depending on your dogs health and nutritional needs. If you can’t afford anywhere near this type of investment, you really should reconsider adopting that little fluffball. He deserves more than just love, he deserves a full belly and good health. And people who adopt puppies without thinking it through are most likely to be dumping that (now full grown) dog at the local shelter.
If you think you are ready to adopt a dog and want to save a life and save a little money on the upfront costs, consider adopting a pet from a rescue! Rescue organizations make sure the pets they adopt out are up to date on their shots, in good health and in many cases have the basic necessities such as leashes and collars. Adoption fees are far lower than what you would spend at the vet’s office and you’re saving a life.
